Surat Municipal Corporation promises world-class facilities for people, presents Rs 5.5K-cr budget

The Surat Municipal Corporation presented a draft budget of Rs5,599 crore for financial year 2019-20 with a focus on developing world-class facilities for citizens, and all-round development of the city, which was recently rated as the fastest growing city in the Oxford Economic Report.

Municipal commissioner M Thennarasan presented the draft budget of Rs5,599 crore, which includes capital budget of Rs2,515 crore.

“The draft budget focuses on developing infrastructural facilities in all parts of Surat. We have proposed a number of steps for the city’s beautification, skill upgradation, social security, and environment. It also focuses on steps to improve traffic situation by promoting mass transportation services,” he said. Thennarasan said that no hike was proposed in general taxes, user charges or vehicle tax for the year 2019-20.

The draft budget estimates revenue income of Rs2,939 crore, including Rs795 crore government grant in lieu of octroi duty, Rs402 crore general tax, Rs634 crore user charge, professional tax Rs150 crore, and non-tax revenue of Rs715 crore.

The revenue expenditure is estimated at Rs3,084 crore, which includes Rs1,609 crore establishment cost, Rs727 crore towards repair & maintenance and electricity expenditure, among others.

Thennarasan proposed Rs152.43 crore works for Tapi purification. The works include a sewage treatment plant at Valak, sewage treatment plant and pumping station at Varachha, and sluice gate on Valak rivulet.

The budget proposed Rs25 crore expenditure for various studies for the proposed conventional barrage on Tapi, and Tapi Riverfront development. The commissioner earmarked Rs198 crore for road projects, and Rs208 crore for river bridge, railway overbridge. Expansion of BRTS corridor, purchasing electric buses, setting up charging stations, are some of the other works proposed. The budget also proposed measures to encourage digital payments.
