In death, an ITI student from Surat gave a fresh lease of life to six people, who received his heart, kidney and other organs.

Mihir Patel, 18, sustained severe head injuries while he was returning home after appearing in an examination at his college on Monday evening. Mihir’s motorcycle was hit by a dumper, which led to the accident and injuries to him. He was rushed to the hospital, where a CT scan revealed blood clotting in brain. He was declared brain dead by doctors yesterday.

Mihir’s father Bharat, a businessman by profession, and other family members agreed to donate his organs after being counselled by Donate Life, an organisation working for organ donation.

The organisation said that Mihir’s heart was transplanted to Noida resident Govind Mehra, 32, at All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), New Delhi. The heart covered the 1,158 km distance from Surat to AIIMS in 177 minutes.

One of Mihir’s kidneys was transplanted to Surat resident Sanjay Kanani, 34, and the other to Adnan Ansari, 12, of Ahmedabad.

His liver was transplanted to 50-year-old Manjula Harsoda of Ahmedabad at the Institute of Kidney Diseases and Research Centre (IKDRC). Mihir’s eyes were donated to Lokdrashti Eye Bank of Surat. Donate Life said that it has been involved in donation of 19 hearts, 277 kidneys, 113 livers, six pancreas, and 228 eyes in the past two years.
