The decision to boycott booking portals Makemytrip.com and goibibo.com by hoteliers in Ahmedabad is receiving support from hoteliers of Mumbai, Bengaluru and Chandigarh. They say that what hoteliers in Ahmedabad have done is a precedent for them and has exposed the exploitative practices of booking portals.

Narendra Somani, president of Hotel and Restaurant Association – Gujarat (HRA – Gujarat) said that Saturday onwards, customers booking through above portals will not be entertained, while those coming through other portals will be entertained.

"The issues hoteliers here have raised are felt everywhere in India. Online portals want to control the market. They are not treating us like partners," said Sooryah Pokkali, president of Association of Indian Hotels and Service Appartments. He had come to Ahmedabad to participate in a meeting of local hoteliers, who have declared a boycott of selected portals. He considers the move by Ahmedabad hoteliers as a precedent for hoteliers across the country. They want that the commission of portals should not be more than 15 per cent and that there should be a base price below which portals cannot offer rooms to consumers.

In a letter to HRA - G, Hotel and Restaurant Association of Chandigarh said that hoteliers in Chandigarh are also facing exploitation from booking portals. It has sought a reasonable resolution or else they will dissociate from certain portals. Budget Hotels Association of Mumbai said in a letter that they are extending all the support to HRA – G in their fight against injustice and exploitation on the part of booking portals.

HRA – G president Narendra Somani thanked all the associations who have come out in their support and expressed hope that what has begun as a small resistance in Ahmedabad, will soon become a nationwide resistance. Travel Agents Association of Gujarat (TAG) has also extended their support to HRA – G saying that portals are disrupting the pricing of rooms to the extent that the business no longer viable.
