Gujarat BJP’s core committee met on Monday evening to analyse Assembly poll results, particularly party’s bad performance in rural areas ahead of the local body polls in February and Lok Sabha polls in 2019.

The meeting at party’s headquarters Shri Kamalam near Gandhinagar was attended by state BJP chief Jitu Vaghani, CM Vijay Rupani, Deputy CM Nitin Patel and other members of the committee.

A senior leader in the party and core committee member said, “It was the worst ever show by BJP in Gujarat. The reason is agrarian crisis that BJP government failed to identify, may it be Anandiben or Rupani’s government. The impact of Patel agitation in Saurashtra and Thakor agitation in North Gujarat also affected poll prospects. The party is trying to overcome these.”

Less payment of crop insurance, MSP, compensation against natural calamities and Congress’s attack on BJP helped the opposition to gain sympathy of rural voters. Leaders also concluded that Congress’s strategy to support agitation leaders was a master stroke by Rahul Gandhi.

He added, “It has been decided that the Gujarat government should focus on agrarian issues, employment to youth and others that can help improve its image. The government will take several steps to placate farmers and agitators. The local body polls in February will be our test. Our ultimate goal is Lok Sabha polls to be held in 2019.”

The Gujarat government would also act tactfully regarding Hardik Patel. The issues of Nitin Patel’s sulkiness on portfolio and other MLA’s dissident acitivities were also discussed and leaders will try to resolve them. The party has also resolved to start preparations for local body polls to be held in over 1,423 village panchayats, 75 nagarpalikas, 17 taluka panchayats and two district panchayats.
