To increase the number of female students at the Indian Institute of Technology across the country, IIT-Gandhinagar has started a special help desk for JEE prospective female students.

Through the special help desk, the institute shares names and contact details of the faculties, who can be directly contacted by either the students or their parents to answer their queries.

While the institute this time recorded double the number of female students, it plans to increase the number even more. As against a mere 15 female students admitted last year, in 2018-19, IIT-Gn has admitted 29 students.

The result comes following the change in policy made by the IIT council that offered 779 seats exclusively for girls to balance the poor gender ratio across all IITs. As a result, IITs across the country have witnessed a rise in the number of female students.

Speaking about the initiative, professor Neeldhara Misra of IITGn, who has volunteered to help female students through the help desk, said, "We are are reaching out to female candidates to encourage them to take admission at IITs. We are also encouraging them to fill in a large number of choices for different branches in many IITs. This will ensure that they get a seat allotment."

Many IITs, including IITGn, has created a documentary focussing on female faculty and students. "In the documentary, women of IITGn community share their experiences living, studying and working on campus." As per the IIT Council, 14 per cent of the batch should comprise of girls, which for next year will increase to 17 per cent and to 20 per cent in 2020. "Maximum queries that we get are related to the safety on campus, counselling and hostel facilities", said professor Misra.

IIT Mandi is the nodal institute to spearhead this project of an increasing number of female students at IITs. IIT Mandi offers female candidates to get a merit scholarship and Rs 1000 stipend in the first year irrespective of category and parents income which would continue for all 4 years of engineering.
