The Gujarat government has decided to run a special drive for afforestation to increase green cover in the state. The government will go on a mission mode for a tree plantation during August like they ran special drive for water conservation Jal Sanchay Abhiyan during May. The Chief Minister Vijay Rupani made this announcement in Kutch on Friday while inaugurating 69th Van Mahotsav in the state.
"We wish to integrate people's support in government's efforts for the drive as we did it for Jal Sanchay Abhiyan. Gujarat's green cover excluding forest area is 4.06% of the land mass and that is only 2.87% of national average. So far, we could plant around 35 crore trees in last ten years period after the Van Mahotsav began. We could create new forests at 18 different places and with this, there is an increase of 37% in a number of trees," Rupani said.
Vijay Rupani inaugurated a forest named as 'Rakshak Van' at Saraspar village near Rudra Mata dam site in Kutch under the annual event of Van Mahotsav. The forest is dedicated to the brave women of Madhapar village near Bhuj who helped Indian Air Force build a runway for fighter planes. The runway was destroyed in bombarding from Pakistan. The CM felicitated these women on the occasion.
The CM also made the announcement that the Tappar dam in Kutch that supplies water in the region would be filled with Narmada water again. The CM also showed concern for the scanty rainfall in the region and said that the state government would supply all sort of assistance required to Kutch.
"We will not let this region face water scarcity and will fill Tappar dam again. We have also decided that grass depots at every tehsils will be opened for cattle rearing community and grass will be made available at Rs. 2/kg."
