Here is good news for those who want to register or modify their details in the voters’ list. The office of the chief electoral officer (CEO), Gujarat, has initiated a project to connect all the e-gram centres in over 13,000 villages, and urban civic centres of municipalities and municipal corporations, with the electoral roll revision exercise. A pilot project for it will be kicked off in five villages of Gandhinagar district on Monday.

This project is also aimed at reducing the burden of booth level officers (BLOs), who are usually school teachers involved in the revision of electoral rolls. “We are starting this pilot project in five villages - Sardhav, Randheja, Moti Adaraj, Vavol and Rupal - in Gandhinagar North assembly constituency.

After the results of the pilot project, we will connect more than 13,000 village panchayats of the state, which have internet connectivity at the panchayat office. The project is aimed at connecting the village panchayat computer with the Election Commission (EC). So the voters in villages can add, modify, delete or shift their names from the voter’s roll throughout the year,” said Anita Karwal, chief electoral officer.

“Of course, the voters will need to pay nominal fees as decided by EC for updating or registering their details at the village panchayat. But this will save their time as earlier they had to go to their BLOs or taluka or district level offices for adding or modifying their details in the voters’ list. They can fill up Form 6 online to register as voters’ online and after verification, they will get an online reply from EC. They can also get their EPIC (elector’s photo identity card) from village panchayat office.”

There has been extensive awareness drive in these villages about the project to ensure maximum participation. Gram sabha meetings have also been conducted on May 10 in these villages. “After looking at the response, we are planning to implement this project across the state including city civic centres in urban areas,” said Karwal.
