Danny Faure landed at the Ahmedabad airport, where he was welcomed by senior state bureaucrats.
Seychelles president Danny Faure arrived at Ahmedabad on Friday evening to begin his six-day India visit amid souring of ties between the two countries over the African archipelago backtracking on an earlier decision to jointly develop a naval base with India.
Accompanied by a high-level delegation comprising senior ministers, secretaries and other senior officials, Faure landed at the Ahmedabad airport, where he was welcomed by senior state bureaucrats. He headed straight to the hotel since no public engagements were slated.
Officials said that the Seychelles president and his delegation would visit the Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad, for an interaction with faculty members and students at 9.00 am on Saturday.
His next step would be the Sabarmati Ashram, followed by a visit to the Gujarat Forensic Sciences University in Gandhinagar, before leaving for Goa in the afternoon. At GFSU, he is slated to interact with university officials as well as 18 police and intelligence officers from Seychelles who are undergoing training there.
Faure's visit comes just a few days after he announced that the project to develop a naval base in his country jointly with India would not move forward. The development is seen as a setback to India, as experts say the facility would have given the country a strategic advantage in the region.
During his India visit from June 22-27, the Seychelles president is slated to hold delegation level talks with prime minister Narendra Modi and review cooperation in fields of defence, security and others, between the two countries. He is also slated to meet president Ram Nath Kovind and vice-president M Venkaiah Naidu.
