The health department officials of the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) along with a district health department team busted a sex determination racket on Thursday. After conducting a sting operation, the team seized two sonography machines from Harsh Clinic at Saijpur.

The team roped in a decoy patient and a shadow witness for the operation.

Around 9 am, the decoy patient called the agent to Khodiyarnagar. The agent took Rs13,000 from the witness and they reached the clinic in an auto. On the way, they changed 3-4 vehicles because of which the team lost track as they were following on bikes.

At Harsh clinic, a technician (who had been reportedly working there for 18 years) carried out the ultrasound examination. The agent then dropped the decoy patient back to the spot without revealing the sex of the foetus but just confirming she was pregnant.

The agent left that spot and the health team took a lot of trouble to find the agent and locating the clinic. At the clinic, the technician denied conducting sonography test on the decoy. And to prove this, the PNDT team went on the search for the agent. After nabbing the agent, they took her to the clinic. Here the technician was then compelled to confess that he had conducted the test. Around 4 am, a police complaint was filed.

“No doctor was present at the clinic, and the sonography was done by the technician. We have filed a complaint at Nikol police station. Further investigation will be done as per the PCPNDT Act,” said Dr Bhavin Solanki, in-charge medical officer of health, AMC.
