The fourth edition of Sabarmati Marathon is all set to witness a few changes as Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) plans to add international features to the event.

The marathon to be held on January 5, 2014 would see some changes in the route while the Sardar Patel Stadium at Navrangpura is likely to be the finish point. Until now, the marathon used to start and finish at Vallabh Sadan on Sabarmati Riverfront.

It is learnt that municipal commissioner Guruprasad Mohapatra had a meeting with AMC officials on Saturday to check details regarding the preparation for the marathon.

“We have observed that in many countries and even in Olympics, marathon’s finish point is in a stadium. This is why we are planning to change the finish point of Sabarmati marathon to Sardar Patel Stadium at Navrangpura,” said DP Desai, deputy municipal commissioner of AMC.

He added that crowd gathered in the stadium provides better environment for the runners and encourages them. In past editions of the marathon not many people had gathered to cheer for the runners. However, the new finish point might encourage people to be at the stadium and welcome the runners at the finish line.

The civic body is also mulling to change the marathon route back to SG Road. In the last edition (January 2013), the marathon was taken to SP Ring Road via Science City road. “This is primary discussion and we are exploring options for making it work,” said Desai.

AMC also plans to use better technology for recording time of the runners. At present, it is using chip timing a device attached on the legs of the runners. Desai said they will continue using chip timing for adjudging the winner but would try to improve the technology.
