A day before his five-year term as director of Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad (IIMA) came to an end, Prof Samir Barua on Tuesday was granted three months extension by the institute’s board of governors.
“The board has requested me to stay on as director for another three months. I have agreed to the board’s request,” Prof Samir Barua, whose tenure as IIMA director was slated to end on November 7, told DNA.
AM Naik, the chairman of IIMA board of governors and also chairman of the institute’s search and selection panel, and other members of the board were in Ahmedabad on Tuesday.
The board members met faculty members at IIMA and informed them that the process to select the new director is going on. They also conveyed to the faculty that they are taking time to find the right candidate.
The board of governors also met outgoing IIMA director Prof Samir Barua and asked him to continue as director for three more months so that a suitable replacement was found.
According to sources, the search panel headed by AM Naik has interviewed several candidates so far, but hasn’t been able to finalise a potential replacement for Prof Barua. However, the panel is likely to finalise three names in November.
“Once the names are approved, they will be sent to the union HRD ministry which might take a month or two to announce the new director,” said a source.
