Sabarmati Jail inmate hangs self, cops suspect depression

On Tuesday, a case of suicide was lodged with the Ranip Police Station after one of the prisoners of the Sabarmati Jail committed suicide in the jail. Police suspect that prisoner was neglected by his family, after which he got into depression and committed suicide.

The deceased was identified as Hamir Desai, 28, a resident of Bopal. He was put in Sabarmati Jail on April 7 after a rape case was lodged against him. During the investigation, it was revealed that 28-year-old had an affair with a minor girl of Bopal and he had run away with her. A complaint was lodged with Bhopal Police Station following which he was nabbed and sent to jail.

The police had even got the statement of the fellow prisoner’s during which it was revealed that Desai was an orphan and he was taken care of by his Uncle. After he got into the jail in the rape case, nobody came to visit him, after which he felt neglected and committed suicide.
