In an important move, the state government has set up a Rs 50-crore fund that would support research in emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence (AI), robotics, and Internet of Things (IoT).

In the Science, Technology, and Innovation Policy announced in April, the state government had identified ten emerging cutting-edge and high potential technologies where it would enhance research support. Besides AI and IoT, the technologies include biotechnology, polymers and special materials, nano technology, energy storage solutions, waste treatment and management solutions, pollution abatement, sustainable habitat, and nutrition sensitive research.

“We have introduced a dedicated scheme for giving financial support to R&D and innovation in these emerging technologies. The idea is to encourage research in applied sciences. The scheme would be funded out of a dedicated Science, Technology and Innovation fund,” Dhananjay Dwivedi, secretary, science & technology department, said.

The fund has been allotted Rs50 crore to begin with. The upper cap for research support under the Research Support Scheme for R&D (RSSR&D), has been fixed at Rs50 lakh per proposal for a project duration of maximum three years.

“The Gujarat Council on Science & Technology (GUJCOST) will finalise the priority research areas and problems of state and national importance which can be solved by applied or transnational research in science, technology, and through innovation leading to product, process or prototype development,” a government resolution dated December 1, said.

Only researchers working for government owned or government funded research institution, or at a non-profit institution, or at state / central government universities, or at UGC / AICTE approved colleges or institutions would be able to apply for support under the scheme.

GUJCOST will set up a technical advisory committee comprising experts for evaluating proposals and recommending them for research support.
