Residents of a posh bungalow near Shreyas crossing woke up to a rude shock on Friday morning as they were robbed of valuables worth Rs3.49 lakh at knifepoint. Showing no remorse or fear of the law, the robbers even enjoyed ice cream outside the house, before escaping.

Laxmichand Udernani, 68, owner of Lakhi Electronics at Relief Road, has been living with wife Madhu and the families of his three sons, Vasant, Dilip and Rajiv since14 years at house number 45 in Golden Tulip Bungalows, Ambawadi. His daughter Archana Lalwani is visiting from Mumbai with her daughter, as well.

On Thursday, Laxmichand, two of his sons and their families were sleeping in different bedrooms on the second floor of the house, while one son’s family was on the third floor. Madhuben, daughter Archana and granddaughter Viraj were sleeping in a bedroom on the ground floor.

At around 4 am, Archana was awakened by some noise. “I was shocked to see six masked men rummaging through the cupboards and locker in my room. Two of them put knives to our necks and asked us to keep quiet. They even broke the wooden locker with a large screw driver,” said Archana, whose 4-year-old daughter also witnessed the robbery.

Speaking to Satellite police, Madhuben said they all spoke in Hindi and were wearing shorts and baniyan except one. “Finding just Rs14,000 in the locker, they snatched away my gold bangles and earrings. Some of the men then took bed sheets and went to the second floor. They tied an end of the bed sheet to each door handle and the other to the stairway grill, so that no one could open their bedroom door to come help us. They even cut landline phone wires and took away two mobile phones,” recalled the 61-year-old.

The robbers also ransacked some cupboards near kitchen and another room in search of valuables. Before leaving, they snatched the bundle of keys which Madhuben had. “They jumped the rear fence of the house and escaped with our Santro car parked outside,” she said.

In total, valuables worth Rs3.49 lakh, including gold ornaments worth Rs1.20 lakh, Rs14,000 cash, and two mobile phones as well as the getaway Santro car were stolen from the Udernani residence. A case of robbery has been registered by Satellite police, which will investigate further.
