Renewable energy generation, which has crossed 3,400 MW, has come as a big relief for state-run power utility Gujarat Urja Vikas Nigam Limited (GUVNL), which has been forced to buy costly gas-based power in the wake of lower supplies by top private power producers.

Solar power generation has gone up to over 750 MW in the past few days, while wind power generation has been above 2,500 MW due to gusty winds.

Energy expert KK Bajaj said that solar power generation stood at 740 MW at noon on Friday, while wind power generation was 2,750 MW at 4:00 pm.

Due to the surge in power generation, the contribution of renewable energy in the state’s total power demand, which stands above 15,000 MW, is close to about 24%.

“GUVNL has been forced to buy costly power from gas-based power plants due to reduction in power supply by Adani, Essar and other private power producers. The surge in renewable energy generation is a big relief for GUVNL,” said Bajaj.

According to Bajaj, Adani Power was supplying 850 MW electricity to GUVNL on Friday, while Essar had stopped supply of 1,000 MW. Details of power supply from Tata Power, which is another big supplier of electricity to GUVNL, were not immediately available.

Incidentally, GUVNL has floated tenders for procuring 500 MW each from solar and wind power projects. The utility has invited the bids to meet the renewable power purchase obligations, and to meet future needs of its four power distribution companies.

GUVNL managing director Pankaj Joshi could not be reached for a comment.

Bajaj said that GUVNL needs to take steps to ensure that it does not have to buy additional expensive gas-based power as it ends up burdening the consumers.
