With hardly two days left for the 140th annual rathyatra of Lord Jagannath on Sunday, cops are on their toes to ensure that no untoward incident happens in city during the much awaited festival.

Watch towers have been erected at several places and SOG, crime branch and Ahmedabad police have been keeping a vigil at important spots for the past few days. “Several teams have been checking hotels to crack down on anti-social elements. Suspects are being interrogated and over 2,000 people have been detained till now,” said JK Bhatt, JCP on Friday.

He added, “19,000 police personnel including those from bomb squad, dog squad, ATS, crime branch, paramilitary forces, and central reserved police force (CRPF) would be deployed for the event. While two drone cameras will be deployed for air surveillance, 60 CCTV cameras have been installed on the 18-km route.”

The route has been divided into 25 ranges, 53 areas and 135 sub areas for better monitoring.  “The chariots will roll out from Jagannath temple at 7 am and are expected to reach Ranchhod temple (Lord’s mama’s place) in Saraspur by afternoon. Three mobile-mounted CCTV cameras would accompany the chariots,” he said.

As several VVIPs will attend the ‘pahind vidhi’ ceremony at Jagannath Temple in Jamalpur on Sunday morning, CCTV cameras have been installed on the premises. A high security blanket will be thrown around the whole area.

Police commissioner AK Singh will supervise security preparations while the bandobast will be supervised by JK Bhatt. Two control rooms of CCTVs have been made at CP office and Rangeela chowki at Shahpur.  A meeting between trustees and peace committee of the temple, headed by Singh was held recently. Police department has conducted over 35 meetings between DCPs of all zones, traffic and crime branch.
