Various organisations representing the interests of the Rajput community on Saturday stated that they would ensure that the controversial movie, Padmaavat, is not played in theatres in Gujarat.

Rajba Jhala of Rajput Karni Sena said that efforts were being made by the film's director, Sanjay Leela Bhansali, and the movie's production house, to give the impression that Rajputs no more had any issues with the movie.

"Various messages have been circulating in the media that the National Karni Sena and other Rajput groups have seen the movie and feel that it in no way disparages the community, and they no more have issues with the film.
But we want to make it clear that we continue to have problems with the way Bhansali takes the sentiments of the community for granted," said Jhala. He added that the issue was no more about Padmaavat alone.

"Bhansali has made it a habit of making movies that distort the history of Rajputs. It is no more about one movie. He makes money at the cost of the sentiments of a community. We in Gujarat continue to oppose the move. It should not be released here," Jhala said.

He added that the BJP government was also playing games. "On the one hand BJP ruled states in the country banned the movie but the Centre which has BJP in power remained a mute spectator and did not come out in support of the ban. A lot of the problems could have been avoided had the Centre stepped in," said Jhala.

He said the community will approach the state government asking that cases against members of the community relating to violence over the issue be dropped.

"The only fault of those who were arrested is that they happened to be present at the spot. The violence was because of some anti-social elements wanted to create trouble. That doesn't give the government the right to target members of the community," said Jhala.

MULTIPLEX WINDOWS SMASHED IN G’NAGAR

  • Some masked miscreants smashed windowpanes at Cinemax multiplex in Gandhinagar. They also tried to set fire to the place but failed. Rakesh Patel, director, Wide Angle, said the multiplexes in Gujarat will not show the movie. “When community members decide to withdraw their protest, we will screen the movie,” said Patel. He said they also needed assurance that no violence would take place.
