Rajnish Rai — the IPS officer who shook the Narendra Modi government by arresting three IPS officers in the Sohrabuddin fake encounter case and paved the way for the arrest of Modi’s right-hand man Amit Shah — may get a central deputation soon. Meanwhile, three other IPS officers — Ajay Tomar, Piyush Patel and Raju Bhargav — got the green light to move to the Centre.

Rai had applied to the state government for a central deputation even before he reported back for duty after a long study leave. Sources in the state home department told dna that his application had been pending for the last few months and was almost sanctioned. “The department is considering giving the sanction as soon as possible,” a source said.

Others, however, said that Rai’s application was already sanctioned and he could be released by the state government for central deputation in the next few days.

Rai investigated the Sohrabuddin fake encounter case in 2006 when he was posted as deputy inspector-general of police, CID (Crime) and arrested DG Vanzara, Rajkumar Pandian and Dinesh MN (all IPS officers) for their involvement in the fake encounter. Rai, however, was removed from the investigation later.

But his investigation helped the CBI — which was handed over the probe later — to unearth Shah’s role in the case and arrest him eventually.

Rai is currently waiting for his new posting. If he is allowed the central deputation, he would be the second officer after retired DGP Kuldeep Sharma, who went on central deputation despite being at loggerheads with the state government.

Meanwhile, sources in the government said inspector-general of police, posted as joint commissioner of police, sector 1, Ajay Tomar, is going to the Border Security Force (BSF). DIG Patel would also be sent to the BSF, while DIG Bhargava would join the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) on central deputation.

Sources in the home department said these officers could be relieved in the next ten days before the next round of transfers of IPS officers.
