CBI’s interrogation of an accused police officer in Ishrat case promises to push IB’s special director, Rajinder Kumar, deeper into the muddle that is the fake encounter case.

The accused police officer, believed to be then PSI Bharat Patel, has confessed before the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) that Kumar had masterminded the plan to abduct Javed Sheikh and Ishrat Jahan, using DCB sleuths a couple of days before they were gunned down in a fake encounter.

According to the statement, Patel had accompanied GL Singhal to the residence of Kumar, who was then joint director of SIB. Kumar had instructed Singhal to abduct Javed with Ishrat but the latter had refused to do so. The task was, thus, handed over to then DySP (DCB) NK Amin.

“On June 9, 2004, I (Patel) was with Singhal at about 10.15pm. Singhal had received a message from DG Vanzara to speak to him on the phone. When Singhal called him, Vanzara had instructed him to meet Rajinder Kumar at his residence in Samarpan Flats (Shahibaug),” said the statement.

It further states, “Accordingly, we both had reached there. We were told by JD (Rajinder Kumar) that Javed alias Pranesh Pillai, who was under watch of IB for associations and activities with Amjadali, was coming to Ahmedabad along with a girl.” “JD said that the persons would come in the Indica car, gave the number and colour (of the car) and directed to pick up both persons before they reached Ahmedabad, Singhal thought that the idea of picking up the girl was bad: first, the girl was not needed for operational purposes, and it would also lead to complications.”

The statement goes on: “Therefore, Singhal had opined that we should allow them to reach Ahmedabad and then wait for an opportunity to take the boy (Javed Sheikh) alone. Therefore, Kumar had talked with Vanzara. After an hour, NK Amin had come and I (Patel) and Singhal were relieved by Kumar.”

In its charge sheet of the Ishrat case, CBI has claimed that NK Amin and Tarun Barot abducted Javed Sheikh and Ishrat Jahan from Vasad and kept them in illegal custody at Khodiyar Farm. Kumar had traced both the deceased through his two sub-ordinates, Ashad and Owais.
