The state received incessant rainfall in the past one week, especially in south Gujarat and Saurashtra regions. Gir Gadhada in Gir Somnath district received 364 mm rainfall between 8am and 6pm on Monday, according to the state emergency operation center. A government official said one person has died due to drowning caused by the heavy rainfall. The government has roped in different agencies to handle the situation.

"The situation in the state is under control," said Pankaj Kumar, principal secretary of Revenue Department.

"Evacuation and rescue operation was done at several places such as Olpad (Surat), Valsad and Navsari. NDRF team was deployed to rescue 52 passengers of a meter gauge train. A death has been reported in Mahua taluka. NDRF teams have been alerted as there is a forecast of heavy to very heavy rainfall."

Forecast for the next five days According to IMD, Ahmedabad, Director Jayanta Sarkar, the state will receive widespread rainfall in the coming days. "Two systems are active across the state. There is an upper air cyclonic circulation over Gujarat region and a well-marked pressured area from Odisha, which will cause heavy to very heavy rainfall across the state."

He said Ahmedabad is also expected to receive light to moderate rainfall.

Rain clouds over PM’s visit

The areas which the PM Narendra Modi will visit on July 20 during his one day tour to Gujarat are affected heavily by the downpour. The PM will visit Valsad and Junagadh where the flood situation has arisen.

The Chief Minister Vijay Rupani, however, said the programme of PM’s tour was unchanged. Rupani visited the state emergency operation centre on Monday after the flood situation reported in seven districts of Gujarat.

Talking to media persons here, Rupani said, “Junagadh and Valsad are highly affected due to the flood and PM is going to visit both these districts. There are four days to go before that and that is why there is no change in PM’s schedule and visit.”
