After Vadodara, it was the turn of South Gujarat to face the fury of the rains with Umerpada in Surat district recording 14-inch of rainfall in 14 hours. Of this, four-inch of rain was recorded in a mere two hours between 2 pm and 4 pm. In fact, the top five talukas to receive rain in the state on Sunday were all in South Gujarat. The second-highest rainfall was recorded in Hansot in Bharuch, which received 11-inch of rainfall while Kaprada in Valsad received over 10 inches. Eight teams of NDRF and two teams from the Indian Air Force have been pressed into service in the affected districts.

The heavy rains forced the administration to evacuate over 13,000 people — of them 10,000 were from Vadodara rural and Navsari — to safer places. Breaking it down, Pankaj Kumar, additional chief secretary, revenue, said that 5,965 people from Vadodara, 5,392 from Navsari, 240 people in Bharuch, 170 in Surat and 100 in Tapi were among the rescued locals.

Meanwhile, the Indian Air Force also helped rescued 49 people from the heavily-flooded areas in Navsari and Narmada district. This included 45 from Mendhar village in Navsari, who were trapped in a prawn farm when the water levels suddenly surged around them.

Additionally, three girls were reported dead while their parents were injured after a wall collapsed on their house in the Nadeda village of Bharuch due to the incessant rains.

Navsari collector, MD Modiya, said the evaluation was necessitated due to the surging water level of Ambik and Purna rivers. Several areas of the district are already waterlogged, with some of them cut off from the rest of the state. The rise in water level in Daman Ganga river in Valsad has also forced the administration to issue an alert for low-lying areas. In all, 160 talukas received rains on Sunday while waterlogging at the Bharuch and Surat forced the Indian Railways to cancel 26 trains and divert 15 others.

To add to the mayhem, the Met department has warned of further heavy to extremely heavy rains in Narmada, Chhota Udepur, Valsad, Bharuch. Vadodara, Anand and Tapi are also likely to get very heavy rainfall. Following the prediction, the Vadodara city administration has advised citizens to stock up on groceries and avoid going out.
