Poor dental hygiene, rampant use of tobacco and the lack of flossing habit is together turning out to be the major reason for poor dental health in the state. Experts at the 41st Indian Prosthodontic Society Conference said that the super-speciality field of dentistry presented hope for patients who have lost several of their teeth including those who have undergone extensive surgery for oral cancer.

The conference — being held for the first time in the city — was attended by around 1,800 delegates including experts from across the country and the world. The conference also presented workshops on various developments in the field for post graduate students of the discipline.

Dr JR Patel, organising chairman of the event, said that prosthodontics is a super-specialty of dentistry that helps in artificial restoration of the teeth. “There is a need for prosthetic rehabilitation in the country. Many oral cancer patients for example go on living with the after effects of cancer surgery on their face without realising that they can restore it with the help of prosthetics. In fact, it can be used even for people who have lost an eye or an ear,” said Dr Patel.

Talking about the poor oral hygiene in the state Dr Somil Mathur said that one of the primary reasons was the use of tobacco — particularly of the chewing variety. “The lack of flossing habit is another reason. In fact, here people hardly do it when it can be an excellent protection against gum disease and tooth decay,” said Mathur.

He further added that food habits were another reason why we were not able to maintain strong teeth. “Earlier we had more raw and fibrous food. At present the junk food that we have has too much sugar, almost no fibres and is too soft which in turn sticks to the teeth. This couple with improper brushing affects oral health,” he said.
