It’s official now. Unable to reach a consensus on the name of the new director for the Indian Institute of Management (IIMA), Board of Governors (BoG) has decided to extend tenure of current director Prof Samir Barua till March 31, 2013.

This is Barua’s second extension as IIMA director after his five-year term at the helm ended on November 7, 2012.

With this move, Barua becomes only the second director in the history of IIMA to host convocation for six consecutive years as director

The chairman of the IIMA BoG and L&T chief AM Naik requested Barua to continue on the post till March-end during which institute will hold its 48th convocation on March 23.

His second extension means that he will keep heading the prestigious business institute for another month and half after his first extended tenure comes to an end today.

Naik, who was at IIMA on Wednesday, is believed to have informed faculty about the decision. It is believed that faculties and others have been informed that after March 31, acting director will take over director’s charge from Barua.

When being asked if he had been given another extension of three months, Barua said, “You have got the period of extension wrong. I have agreed to see the convocation through on being urged to do so by chairman. It has been an honour to serve this great institution for about three and a half decades in various capacities,” he said. Apart from this, a meeting between chairman and faculties was also held to discuss ‘internal’ matters.

Sources say IIM-Bill 2012 was discussed in the meeting apart from the faculty’s expectation from the BoG. The faculty requested the BoG to include faculties while taking decisions regarding the institute.

The faculty was of the view that IIM Bill 2012 is a threat to institute’s autonomy.
