As the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) is set to auction properties to recover outstanding tax dues, it appears that the civic body is helpless when it comes to recovering pending dues from government bodies.

AMC data shows that Ahmedabad police owes it Rs 12.65 crore towards service charge. The dues involve 6,261 properties, including police stations, police lines, and other premises, owned by the police department.

Data shows that in several cases, the dues have been outstanding for seven to eight years. In some cases, the dues have been pending since as long ago as 2006-07.

The pending service charge of Vejalpur police station alone stands at Rs 92.21 lakh, according to AMC. Among others, Vastrapur police station's pending property tax is Rs 14.02 lakh, Karanj police station's Rs 8.95 lakh, and that of Kagdapith police station is Rs 6.54 lakh.

Though the outstanding dues have only gone up over the years, AMC said that police department has been clearing the amount off in phases.

"The department pays the service charge as it receives grants from the government. Our zonal officials are in touch with police," Debashish Banerjee, Deputy Tax Collector, AMC, told Zee 24 Kalak.

Vipul Aggarwal, joint commissioner of police (administration), Ahmedabad city, said the dues were pending on account of other expenditures, but assured that they would be cleared soon.

"The grant is limited. We will seek a special grant from the state government to settle the outstanding amount," he said.

Railways is the second major 'defaulter' of AMC dues. Data shows that the Railways owes Rs 19.15 crore to Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation on 618 properties owned by it in the city.

"The service charge dues are pending on both office as well as residential premises," said an AMC official, adding that the taxes have been due since 2008-09.

Railway officials declined to comment for the story when contacted.
