The Congress Working Committee (CWC), on Tuesday, accused Prime Minister Narendra Modi of exploiting the issue of national security in a bid to divert attention from “his failures and falsehoods”.

The CWC, attended by the entire top brass of Congress, discussed the current political situation, reviewed preparations for Lok Sabha elections, gave final shape to its strategy for the polls, and also deliberated on the party’s manifesto. This was also the first CWC meet for Priyanka Gandhi.

The meet, held in Gujarat after a gap of 58 years, also authorised Congress President Rahul Gandhi and top leadership to decide on alliances for polls.

“The Congress Party expresses its strong disappointment that the Prime Minister is cynically exploiting the issue of national security, on which we are all united, to divert attention from his colossal failures, bogus claims, and persistent falsehoods,” a resolution adopted by the CWC said.

The document reiterated the Congress’s support to the government and armed forces in the battle against terror.

Addressing the CWC meet, former prime minister Dr Manmohan Singh expressed concern over the state of the Indian economy, and in particular, the agricultural sector, a participant said.

Congress President Rahul Gandhi wrote on Twitter that the CWC resolved to defeat the RSS/BJP ideology of fascism, hatred, anger, and divisiveness.

“No sacrifice is too great in this endeavour; no effort too little; this battle will be won,” he wrote in the midst of the party seeking to forge alliances to defeat the BJP.

Senior Congress leader Anand Sharma said that the CWC has resolved that the very idea of India, as envisaged by Mahatma Gandhi, Jawaharlal Nehru, and Sardar Patel, was under threat under the current regime. It also accused the government of failing to deliver.

“This government has been a failure on all fronts, and has inflicted pain and misery on people through its reckless decisions of demonetisation and flawed GST. Lakhs of factories were closed, unorganised sector, MSMEs were worst-affected, and tens of millions of workers lost their jobs,” it said.

Sharma accused the Modi government of “monumental mismanagement” of economy, and described joblessness, agrarian crisis, and farm distress as issues of grave concern.

“We will not allow the BJP to deflect attention from these issues,” he said.

The resolution said that the Congress would approach people with humility to seek their support in the elections.

“A mandate for better governance and accountability, to repair the grave damage caused to our democratic polity, economy and society by the Modi government,” it said.
