The Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) has decided to give a new look to the Sanskar Kendra Museum and, in order to achieve that, made a provision of Rs 20 crore during the budget this year. The grand plan, however, is in shambles as nobody has come forward with a plan to conserve it.
The AMC was forced to extend the deadline of the tender.
"We invited a bid from the archaeologist conservationist to renovate the museum. We are looking for the more options. So, we've extended the bid. May 18 is the last date to receive bids from interested players," said Ketan Thakkar, deputy municipal commissioner, heritage department. "We want to make it in such a way that it becomes an entry point for the visitors," said municipal commissioner Mukesh Kumar.
"This is a special work and we want to engage people for a long duration. The experts think that it is going to be a unique project. The restoration work will start soon," he said.
The commissioner also said that the civic body is looking for consultant architect and for the civil work to carry out the restoration work. One of the conservationists said the structure is highly susceptible to the corrosion as it is made of cement and iron bars.
Restoration of the structure will be a great challenge. The museum gets more than a thousand visitors in a month but sadly, it is not maintained well.
Also, there are no guides. Moreover, there is no curator – a matter of concern. The building houses a kite museum, too, which has a collection of kites and photographs. Most of the kites are in very poor condition and need attention. For quite some time, the AMC's election department used to function from the second floor of the museum, but their premises have been shifted recently.
Located near Sardar Bridge, Paldi, it is the first modernist building in India. It was designed by the architect Le Corbusier who named it ‘Museum of Knowledge
The museum has sections related to history of the city, art and photography. It also has a section on various communities of Ahmedabad
