Pilot, golfer, international chess player, IIM-A's new batch has it all

The new batch of 2018-20 is not just diverse gender-wise, but also in work experience and educational background

Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad, the most premier management institute of the country, is increasingly attracting people from diverse backgrounds, introducing richness and diversity in the classroom. The new batch of 2018-20 is not just diverse gender-wise, but also in work experience and educational background. The batch includes a pilot, an international chess player, a golfer, a lawyer, a philanthropist, and a person who made it to the Limca Book of Records.

An international chess player Nitin Pai, who represented the country in the Commonwealth Chess Championship joined IIM-A to become a world-class manager. He is also a chess writer for the Chessbase India and has organised three all India FIDE-rated tournaments at IIT-Madras.

Surat-based Meet Agrawal featured in the Limca Book of Records at the age of 10 for playing 47 instruments in 11 minutes. Meet is also a national-level roller-skater and an international chess player. He was also captain of Gujarat's table tennis team. He is one of three non-engineers to have scored 100 percentile in CAT 2017.

Pranay Tyle, on the other hand, is a licensed pilot from the United States and has spent 100 hours in the cockpit. Having a vast experience as a researcher and a philanthropist, Tyle studied Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering at the Johns Hopkins University. At Hopkins, he conducted extensive oncology research for three years and eventually worked with Hilliard Lyons Investment Banking in the United States and helped in expanding their healthcare practice.

A professional golfer, Mehak Sharma from Agra will bring her experience through the journey in sports to IIM-A classrooms. Mehak graduated in Commerce from Delhi University and thereafter worked for Deloitte as an audit assistant. She was introduced to golf at the age of 10 after accompanying her father to Army golf courses.She started taking part in tournaments at the age of 14 and became a professional player in 2016. Her first major win was the Captain's Cup at Army Golf Course, Delhi, in the open category in 2012. She played her first professional tournament in Ahmedabad. She holds the 8th rank in the Indian Golf Union (IGU) in Southern Indian Junior and Ladies Championship, Bengaluru.

Sharma says, "Even though there is no dearth of talent in sports in India, sportsmen strive to make a living in this country and there is an urgent need to boost all sports and not just a select few."
