The Gujarat High Court on Wednesday sought a response from Gujarat Pollution Control Board (GPCB) as well as the municipal corporations of Ahmedabad, Vadodara, Surat, and Rajkot, after a petition seeking a ban on manufacture, sale, and use of disposable paper cups and glasses came up for hearing.

According to the petitioner Dipak Maheta, paper cups and glasses are being sold and used as an eco-friendly alternative of plastic glasses, which is nothing, but a myth. The petitioner said the paper cups and glasses have a very thin layer of plastic on the inner side having a thickness lesser than 20 microns and are non-recyclable. The petitioner has demanded that the court should direct the authorities to implement Rule 4 and 9 of the Plastic Waste Management Rules, 2016, to prohibit the sale and manufacture of these disposable multilayered products.

The petitioner has also claimed that the disposable paper cups and glasses are actually made out of low-density polyethene (LDPE) plastic in contravention of rules and there is an urgent need to create awareness to create awareness regarding the same. He has also claimed in his petition that the thin plastic layer often leeches harmful chemicals when used for a hot or cold beverage. He clarified that paper alone cannot hold beverages without the inner plastic layer.
