Eye check-ups conducted in Ahmedabad Municipal Schools (AMC) under the School Health Programme from December 2017 to March 2018 revealed that over 21,000 primary section students have weak eyesight while around 1,119 kids under Aanganwadi were affected by poor eyesight.

In one of the cases, a mere two and half-year-old Mahek (mame changed) was detected with an even severe eyesight condition — congenital cataract. Although Mahek has vision problem since childhood, here parents weren't aware enough to get her treated for the same.

"We knew of her vision problem since she was born. In January, when Anganwadi workers called her for a medical check-up, she was examined by doctors. The doctors had asked us to bring her to the nearest urban health center," said Mahek's father. He added, "She was then referred to the civil hospital. The hospital has given her some eye drops and medicines." Mahek is currently undergoing treatment at a civil hospital for a cataract operation.

According to experts, it is rare for kids around Mahek's age to have cataract. "Cataract among kids is known as congenital cataract. There are many reasons for it. During pregnancy if mother falls sick and takes medicines, it can adversely affect the child. Also, deficiency of vitamins lead to the cause," said Dr Tejas Desai, superintendent, Nagri Eye Hospital.

As many as 21,379 kids studying in primary section of Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) have been prescribed to wear spectacles, while in Anganwadi 1,119 kids have been prescribed the same. The spectacles are being provided by the state government itself.

"Poor vision can't be called a disease. Their problem is detected at an early age. Development of vision goes on till 14 years of age, and if problem is detected in time, it helps in development of vision. Such kind of health programmes in schools helps rehabilitate vision," added Dr Desai.

"Under the School Heath Rashtriya Bal Swasthya Karyakram, kids are entitled to get free treatment and services. All the kids who are found with poor vision are given spectacles by the government," said Dr Bhavin Solanki, medical officer in-charge.
