Over 2,000 jobs are on offer for fresh graduates, recent graduates and undergraduates at an apprentice job fair that will be held — jointly by Gujarat University, Ahmedabad Chapter of Institute of Chartered Accountants of India (ICAI) and Department of Labour and Employment of the state government — on Friday.

Close to 200 Chartered Accountants (CAs) in the city are hunting for accountants (about 650 vacancies), audit assistants (about 730 vacancies), computer operator and data entry operators (about 400) and peons (about 200). Sources in accounting watchdog segment say that there are ten times more CA in the city and the overall demand for the fresh workforce is even higher.

They will be subjected to a training of 2-4 months and entitled to a monthly stipend of Rs 12,000, Rs 10,000 and Rs 8,000 respectively. "This gives an opportunity for jobs to students who have done graduation and masters in Commerce to pursue a carrier in accounting, audit and data entry. Those who have passed secondary exams are qualified for the post of peons," said Kinjal Desai, placement officer at GU.

"There is a shortage of workforce after the rollout of Goods and Services Tax (GST). We will train these students and there is a very high chance that these students will be absorbed CAs," said Nirav Choksi, chairman of Ahmedabad branch of ICAI. The city is home to close to 10,000 CAs and 2,500 firms of CAs. "Requirement of compliance has increased with the rollout of Real Estate Regulation Act (RERA), GST and Insolvency and Bankruptcy Code (IBC) in quick succession. Moreover, the volumes of filings has also increased," said Bishan Shah, a partner at Bishan R Shah & Co.

Tapan Vyas, principal of Industrial Training Institute and Ranip in Ahmedabad said that this is first of its kind of job fair involving ICAI in the country. With the kind of response it has got so far, he is optimistic that it will be replicated in other cities of the state.
