1,215 nominations have been filed for the 89 seats going to polls in the first phase on December 9, official sources said. Tuesday was the last day for filing of nominations.

According to officials, as many as 377 nominations were filed on Monday to go with the 111 filed earlier, taking the total number to 488. As is always the case, most of the nominations were filed on the last day.

Majority of the candidates of the BJP, Congress and other parties such as Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), Nationalist Congress Party (NCP), and Shiv Sena, filed their nominations on Tuesday, and so did many independent candidates.

However, the number will come down as nomination forms of dummy candidates will be rejected during scrutiny on Wednesday. A clear picture about the candidates left in fray will emerge only on Friday, which is the last day for withdrawing nominations.

The filing of nominations for the second phase of polling on December 14 also commenced on Monday. 93 seats in north and central Gujarat will go to polls in phase two.
