Surat, which is famous for its textile and diamond industries, is also showing the way in organ donation. The state's second largest city accounts for more than half of all organ donations that take place in the state.

Out of 180 cadaver organ donations reported in the state in 2017, Surat accounted for 91. Ahmedabad was second with 28 organ donations.

Out of 106 cadaver kidney donations from January 1 to December 31, Surat accounted for 52, followed by Bhavnagar with 17 and Ahmedabad with 15. Out of 62 liver donations, Surat's share was 28, while Rajkot and Bhavnagar had eight each. Out of ten heart donations in 2017, nine were from Surat, and the remaining solitary one from Bhavnagar.

"We are seeing a lot of awareness about organ donation among people of Surat in the last couple of years. We have a long way to go, but we are on the right track," Nilesh Mandlewala, president of Donate Life, a Surat-based organisation working for organ donation, adding that they are now also working for organ donation awareness in Anand and Kheda districts.

The organisation has been responsible for donation of as many as 625 organs including kidneys, livers, pancreas, hearts and eyes, in the last 4-5 years. In 2018 so far, it has facilitated donation of 34 kidneys, 15 livers, two hearts and 30 eyes.

According to official statistics, there are about 20 lakh patients suffering from kidney ailments in the country. Around 2-2.5 lakh new patients are registered every year. However, because of low awareness levels about organ donation – the ratio of organ donors is 0.5% in India as against 34% in Spain and 26% in the US - many patients breath their last waiting for a kidney donor.

Experts say that cadaver organ donations could be the lifeline for many of these patients. Over 1.5 lakh people lose their lives every year in road accidents, and even if organs of a small chunk of them are donated, they could provide a fresh lease of life to several others.
