A court in Morbi sentenced Bhuj MLA Nimaben Acharya, former MLA Kanti Amrutiya, and one more person to one year jail in connection to a case dating back to 2009.

A case was registered against Acharya, Amrutiya, and former BJP leader and now PAAS convener Manoj Panara, for violation of the Model Code of Conduct ahead of the 2009 Lok Sabha elections.

Addressing a poll rally in Morbi on March 18, 2009, Amrutiya had announced a cash prize of Rs1.5 lakh for the area in Morbi that gets highest votes for the BJP. Nimaben Acharya, who represents Bhuj seat in the state assembly, announced award of Rs5 lakh from the MPLAD (Member of Parliament Local Area Development) Fund. Panara was the organiser of the rally.

A case was registered against the two MLAs as well as Panara by the election authorities under IPC 171-B (Gratification), 188 (Disobedience to order promulgated by public servant) and 144 (abettor present when offence is committed). On Monday, Morbi’s chief judicial magistrate sentenced the three accused to one year in jail. However, all three were granted 30-day bail to allow them to appeal against the verdict.
