One-night rain leaves Ahmedabad with 31 uprooted trees, 56 potholes

Friday night gave A'bad 5% of its average seasonal rainfall; more expected today.

A day after heavy rain lashed the city, Ahmedabad woke up to uprooted trees and potholes. The damage should not be surprising for, the city on Friday night received about 5% of the average rainfall of the season. Meanwhile, the state on the same day received just 2% of its average rainfall for the season. The city, which on an average received 37.62 mm of rainfall, recorded 31 instances of uprooted trees and 56 instances of potholes.

The new west zone bore the maximum brunt of the monsoon fury as it received 57.70 mm of rainfall followed by west zone, which got 51.83 mm of rainfall.

The highest number of trees (12) was also uprooted in the west zone followed by the new west zone (10).

As far as potholes and cave-ins were concerned, 25 cave-ins were reported from new west zone followed by the east zone with 14 cave-ins.

According to details available with the Gujarat State Disaster Management Authority (GSDMA), Porbandar has already received 50% of the average rainfall. This is the scene when it’s been just a week since monsoon set in.

Interestingly, it is Saurashtra that has received the maximum rainfall when the average rainfall for each region is taken into consideration. It has so far received 21% of the total average rainfall followed by South Gujarat (13%).

The state has till now received 12% of its average rainfall indicating that the monsoon is likely to be normal this year.

Gujarat has recorded 16.5 mm of rainfall in the last 24 hours with 25 districts and 129 talukas receiving downpour.

The maximum rain was recorded in Umarpada in Surat, which got 115 mm of rainfall on Saturday followed by Kamrej (92mm) Devipada (90mm), Junagadh (50mm) and Keshod (53mm).

Junagadh district received the highest rainfall after it recorded 23mm of average rainfall.
The district was followed by Saurashtra, which recorded an average of 13 mm of rainfall.

The Met department has predicted one or two spells of rain for the city. But, for the state, it has warned of heavy to very heavy rain in almost all the districts of Gujarat and Daman and Diu in the next 12 hours.

Despite the rain, the temperature in Ahmedabad did not come down much with the city recording a maximum temperature of 35.1 degrees Celsius, four degree below normal.
