With Diwali done with, most Amdavadis have their bags packed for the impending vacations. Their homes will remain closed for a long time, and are ideal targets for burglars to strike. Such is the apathy among Amdavadis about their closed homes that it attracts gangs of burglars from other states to strike in Gujarat.

But city police isn’t staying put in such situation. In their endeavour to curb break-ins during Diwali, police stations maintaining logs of those households in their jurisdiction that are closed during the vacation. Residents can call the police and let them know that they are not in town.

To spread awareness about this service, posters are being stuck on notice boards of societies – said RC Pathak, assistant commissioner of police, ‘J’ Division.

Chairman and secretary of many societies have been intimated about the call service,” said Pathak. “Residents simply have to call us and let us know that they are leaving for a holiday,” he added. Strict vigil will be maintained on these residences and a list of the same will be available at the nearest police station.

Police are also cornering regular offenders, who are active during Diwali. As per DCP with Detection of Crime Branch (DCB) – Ahmedabad, Himanshu Shukla, crime branch will sustain the vigil in burglary-prone areas of the city. Most of these sensitive zones are in the western part of the city.

Sources, however, say that it is difficult to nab housebreakers as they strike during Diwali – when people are vacationing and police are a tad relaxed. “Gangs travel from Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh, to burgle houses in Gujarat.
