The state government on Friday extended the deadline for installation of High Security Registration Plates (HSRP) in all vehicles by a month.
The deadline was slated to expire on March 31, but in view of the large number of vehicles still without HSRP, it was extended till April 30. The extension comes after the Supreme Court permitted the same in view of the state government plea to extend it.
This is the third extension of the deadline. It was originally slated to expire on January 5, but was extended till February 15, before another extension till March-end.
“The deadline for HSRP installation has been extended till April 30 in public interest,” the Commissioner of Transport said in a statement.
The high security registration plates are required to be installed in all vehicles, old and new, in view of a Supreme Court order.
More than 1 crore out of 2.1 crore vehicles registered in the state are yet to be fitted with HSRP. Majority of the vehicles without the high security number plates are older ones as RTOs have been fitting HSRPs in vehicles registered after November 2012.
Officials said that installation of HSRP was taking place only at Regional Transport Offices (RTOs) a year ago, but the work has been decentralised since then to ensure that the plates can be installed in all vehicles at the earliest.
“Auto dealers have been accorded status as deemed RTO for installing the high security registration plates. Out of 1,145 auto dealers in the state, 723 or 63% have been roped in for this. The price for fixing of the HSRP has been fixed, and legal action will be initiated against anyone indulging in irregularities of any kind,” the statement said.
Deputy Chief Minister Nitin Patel said that the drive to replace old number plates with high-security plates is going ahead at full steam to comply with the Supreme Court order.
