In a major relief, private car users, commuting to the Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International airport to either drop off or receive passengers, can now enter the premise without getting in hassles of a toll-booth. However, as per the new vehicle management system, commercial vehicles visiting the airport (Arrival area) to pick up passengers will be charged Rs 50 for availing business from the airport.

The Airports Authority of India (AAI) has decided to revoke the ten-minute return window failing which passengers or vehicles had to pay Rs 85 while coming out of the airport premise. Taking into consideration several hassles faced by commuters, the authorities have waved off the charges for private cars.

Confirming the same, Manoj Gangal, Airport director, said, "We had proposed to the headquarters a few months ago to make it toll fee for the private cars. After getting a nod, we have decided to not charge anything from private cars if they visit the airport to either drop or receive passengers. However, if they wish to be parked in the parking lot, they will have to pay as per the parking charges. Commercial vehicles coming to drop off passengers will also be exempted from any charges but if commercial vehicles visit the arrival bay, they will have to pay Rs 50."

As a special consideration, those who want to park their vehicles for upto 30 minutes will have to pay nominal charges that include Rs 10 for two-wheelers, Rs 30 for cars and cabs and Rs 40 for buses and coaches. Vehicles that are parked from 30 minutes to 120 minutes will have to pay Rs 85 for cars, Rs 20 for two-wheelers and Rs 100 for coaches, buses and SUVs. After two hours, rates of all vehicles other than two-wheelers will increases by Rs 20 per hour.

Speaking about the charges fixed for commercial vehicles, sources said, "If a passenger takes a cab to reach the airport, it will not be charged as the cab driver did not get business from airport. But if he comes to pick up a passenger, then he is getting business from the airport which is why we have imposed these charges."

Authorities will also have officials to monitor movements on private cars. Travelling to the airport had become a nightmare for people travelling by their own vehicle as they had to return after dropping or picking up within ten minutes failing which car owners had to pay Rs 85. Often, passengers would return within the time limit but had to pay while waiting in the long queue at the toll-booth. The new proposal will be implemented shortly.

The New System

  • No toll charges for private vehicles coming to pick or drop off passengers at the airport
  • No toll charges for commercial vehicles dropping off passengers
  • Commercial vehicles picking up passengers from the airport will have to pay a fees of Rs 50
