For the family members of the Godhra train carnage victims, the wait never seems to end. First, it was the long wait for justice, now for compensation.

Nearly six months after the Gujarat High Court directed the state government to pay a compensation of Rs 10 lakh each to the families of the 59 people killed in the Godhra train violence, the families say they have no clue when the relief is coming.

A division bench of Justices AS Dave and GR Udhwani had passed the order for the recompense in mid-October 2017.

Harsh Chondagar, son of Ami who was among those killed in the train burning incident, said he has approached the Mamlatdar office several times. "A month ago, they came to collect our details. We gave all the documents that were required of us. But then nothing has moved. I asked them about the compensation status but they just tell us that everything will happen from Gandhinagar," said Chondagar.

Harsh was just six years old in 2002 when he lost his mother. While the initial compensation given by the state went to his father, who too passed away later on. He now lives with his stepmother and sister and is looking forward to using the money to help his sister get married.

Khushboo Raval, granddaughter of Sudha Raval who died in the carnage, said they have not heard anything about the compensation. "Some people from the collector's office had come and sought our details but I don't know what happened after that. They did not tell us anything. But since they came and collected the details I assume we will see the compensation," said Raval.

Raval was in Class 10 at the time of the arson attack. Soon after the death of her grandmother, she lost her father in the riots that followed. She hoped that the compensation money would help her mother in her old age.

Minister of state for Home Pradipsinh Jadeja said the compensation process is still underway and the victim's kin would get it.

VERDICT GIVEN IN OCT
