There's no respite from the scorching heat in Gujarat, where Surendranagar was the hottest place on Wednesday, recording a maximum temperature of 45.7 degree Celsius. Deesa was at 45.2 while Ahmedabad, Idar and Kandla airport registered maximum temperatures of 44.6 degree Celsius, the Indian Meteorological Department stated in a press release.

Day temperatures at Gandhinagar, Rajkot, Bhuj and Amreli stood at 44.5, 44.4, 44.2 and 44 degrees Celsius, respectively, it further stated.

The weatherman predicts likely heat wave conditions for the next two days across many parts of north Gujarat, while for Kutch, severe heat wave conditions are expected to prevail. Maximum temperature is likely to be around 41-45 degree Celsius across north Gujarat, Kutch, parts of Saurashtra and south Gujarat for the next two days.

Owing to the blistering heat, people – especially the elderly and children – had a tough day, relying on beverages such as fresh juices, buttermilk and coconut water to stay hydrated. Those riding two-wheelers were seen covering their heads to protect themselves from the scorching heat.

"Since morning, the weather has been uncomfortable. My mobile was showing the temperature in my area at 47 degree Celsius. I stayed off solid foods through the day and instead, was drinking fresh juice and buttermilk," said Padmakant Patel, a resident of Satellite.

Health department authorities have advised people against venturing outdoors during the afternoon to prevent heat stroke. They have distributed ORS packets among slum dwellers to keep their body temperature under control. They have also suggested consuming more water than usual to compensate for the loss of salt due to sweating.
