The Amdavadis gave a bonus to the Ahmedabad Fire and Emergency Service(AFES) Department employees this year. The staffers, who could celebrate the festival with their families, say the reason for the happiness was that there were no major fire accidents in the city. Also, there were only few who burnt firecrackers, which made a huge difference as compared to other years.

This year, the AFES control room received only 130 calls between October 17 to 21. All the calls were related to minor incidents, which took place at garbage dumps and open areas. There were no cases of injury and no casualties were reported, officials said.

The department received 49 emergency calls in 2016, out of which only nine cases were due to fire. The number was 45 for the same in 2015.

As per fire officials, although more cases reported this year, the incidents were minor in terms of severity. Also, locals swiftly swung into action in several cases this year, leading to quick rescue and handling the cases. MF Dastoor, chief fire officer, said, "This year, few firecrackers were burst in the city. Also, this was the first time when there was fire breaking out in any house."

The schools also actively participated in no-firecrackers campaigns. Also, the price of the crackers going high led to falling in the sell, he said.
