There is no ideological difference among leading political parties in India, and none are capable to taking bold steps to boost to the growth or improve governance, British Parliamentarian Lord Meghnad Desai said in the city on Saturday. a. So the issues of low productivity in agriculture, manufacturing sector and overall governance have persisted.

“It’s like Pepsi and Coca Cola. Everyone feels that a government is needed for every single purpose. No government is willing to privatize the banks or a Public Sector Units like Air India or change labour laws that can improve the productivity of labours and also work in the interest of labourers.

“There is no country where the government operates 27 Public Sector Banks. If you want it you can have one,” he said advocating privatization of Air India saying that people are unaware of how much money tax payer is going down the drain in running such organizations. “I would give Air India for free to anyone. But he needs to take the debt also,” said Desai.

On labour laws, he said that lack of reforms has resulted in contract labour systems, which is working against the interest of workers, while a flexible law would have meant that there would have been more labour unions. “No political party can afford to say that it is growth-friendly ….. Why is it not possible to take tough decisions? Why political parties are so cautious?” he said.

DESAI LAUDS DALIT LEADER KANSHI RAM

Lord Desai also praised Bahujan Samaj Party founder, Kanshi Ram as one of the greatest leaders after independence as he was able to mobilise the Dalits to enable them to bargain for political power to get economic opportunities.  “Kanshi Ram felt that a fragile coalition is more useful than a single party majority as it would give it constituents more bargaining power,” said Desai.
