MJ Library of Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) is actively policing its users on 'morals'. According to the library authorities, wearing short clothes is indecent and an act of indiscipline.

The authorities have issued a notice, mentioning a blanket ban on wearing short clothes, which means that no such people will be allowed to enter the library. "To all the readers of MJ Library, those who come in short clothes will not be allowed to enter library," reads the notice.

At the library many civil services aspirants are regular readers.

Shakeel Shaikh, a regular at the library, found the notice a little strange. "How does it matter what someone is wearing while entering the library? Serious and avid readers come here. There should not be any such notice put up here," said Shaikh.

When contacted, librarian Bipin Modi said that people coming to the library in indecent clothes was an embarrassment for the library. "How can people visit the library wearing such indecent clothes? When we ask them to come in full pants, they aruge. To bring in notice to those who are coming in short cloths, I have placed the notice," Modi said.

"Now I don't need to tell them regularly. People have become more disciplined after I put up this notice," Modi added.

"Is there any specific details about what constitutes a "decent" dressing? If not, then I would say such notices restrict personal freedom and choice. There is a possibility that certain communal and gender groups will be hurt more as a result of such a policy, as we have seen in BHU, Christ University and NLSIU among others", said Tannistha Samanta, Assistant Professor, Social Demography Humanities and Social Sciences, Indian Institute of Technology, Gandhinagar.
