The Gujarat government has been making claims of job creation through investments from Vibrant Gujarat Summit events, but on Friday they admitted that investors were not bound to employ local youth. The government revealed this in response to an unstarred question by opposition MLAs in the Assembly.

The MLAs has wanted to know how many jobs were given to local youth investors who established their set ups in Gujarat in the past five years, till March 31, 2018. The industries and mining department of the government, however, clarified that there was no condition in the memorandum of understanding (MOUs) signed with the investors during Vibrant Gujarat Summit that made it mandatory for the companies to give jobs to local youth.

The MLAs had also cited a circular of the industries department.

The government shared details of the jobs created through the projects implemented and commissioned. However, they did not clarify how many of jobs were given to local youth. Moreover, the MLAs had sought the figures for the past five years but the government only gave an overall number.

According to the reply filed by the government, a total of 28.38 lakh jobs were created through all eight editions of the biennial event, during which 76,512 MOUs were singed, but only 42,456 projects were commissioned. The details revealed that only 50% of the MOUs signed actually actualised.

The questions were asked by Congress MLAs Jashpalsinh Padiyar from Padra and Chandrikaben Bariya from Garbada.
