In major decisions pending over a long time, Gujarat University has done away with centralized admission process for its post-graduate courses. Also, in an attempt to save time and resources that go in conducting prolonged examinations, the university has also reduced the time of examination from three hours to two hours.

All these decisions including reviewing of semester system were taken in executive council and academic council meeting held on Thursday. While the centralized admissions system has been removed for PG courses, the same is under review for under-graduate courses.

Speaking about the same, Dr Himanshu Pandya, Vice-Chancellor, Gujarat University said, "We have taken three major decisions and that include that there will not be any centralized admission for post graduate courses. The same for under graduate programme is under a review and the committee will meet all the stakeholders including student leaders, management to decide on the same. Admissions for post graduate programmes will be conducted online and this would not delay the academic schedule. Untill now, the academic schedule was getting delayed as several rounds of admissions would go on for three months."

Pandya further added, "Second important decision is that we have reduced our examination time from three hours to two hours having three questions of 20 marks each and a 10 mark objective question. The idea is that three hours for a 100 mark paper is justified but not for a 70 mark paper. Also, our exam schedule prolongs for three months with revisions exams which again delays second semester and fourth semester and has cascading effect due to which we are unable to finish assignments on time. Thirdly, the semester system for under-graduate courses is under review, however, the same for post-graduate courses will continue."

Interestingly, a lot of permissions including increasing student intake, commencing new courses in various colleges, etc was also taken in this meeting. Gujarat University is also all set to start new courses that include M.Sc in Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning, new syllabus for BA, MA and M.Phill in History, new syllabus on soft skills in BA in Sanskrit, etc.
