The Congress on Friday questioned the Gujarat model of development citing a recent Niti Aayog report.

“These are not random figures. These are statistics of the Niti Aayog and show the poor Human Development Indices (HDI) of Gujarat, a state that is often touted as the model of development,” said former Maharashtra Chief Minister and senior Congress leader Prithviraj Chavan.

He said Gujarat ranks 22 in primary school enrollment, 23 in Infant Mortality Rates and 21 in child undernourishment.

“Where is the development and who is benefitting from it?”asked Chavan.

The Congress also said that the poor implementation of GST and the ill-conceived demonetisation had practically crippled the economy. “It has hit small businessmen the most,”said Chavan.

The party also criticised the Election Commission’s decision not to announce the Assembly election dates for Gujarat.“The Election Commission is now being jokingly referred to as the Election Omission. It is obvious that the delay in announcement is being done to suit the ruling party,” said Chavan. He was addressing a press conference in the city on Friday.

He said that this was the first time in the history of the EC that it was being accused of taking decisions to help a party in power. “The EC has become a pawn in the hands of the  BJP,”said Chavan.

It should be noted that when the EC failed to announce the dates for Gujarat, it was alleged that it was done to help Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who was visiting Gujarat on October 16, to announce various new projects.

It would not be so had the poll dates been announced as the model code of conduct would come into force.
