After making sustainable products using demonetised notes, National Institute of Design is now working on giving a facelift to Vaishnodevi, the famous shrine in the northern India, which is thronged by millions of pilgrims throughout the year.

The Vaishno Devi Shrine Board, formed in 1986, which undertakes various developmental activities to make the yatra more comfortable, has sought help from NID to enhance the experience of a pilgrim, starting from signanes, facilities, crowd management.

Professor Pravinsinh Solanki, who is spearheading the project along with his team has already readied them.

"To understand the issues that people face every day while going uphill, I visited the shrine nearly four times this year. We are not just looking at signages but also focussing on those people who cannot read in any language. So visually they should be able to guide and help themselves. Another important aspect is that lot of people get lost while on their yatra. So we are planning to make colourful patches on the entire route and place boards which will educate pilgrims from both sides."

Among other aspects, our design includes crowd management, weather conditions, transportation, curbing the monkey menace, numbering the steps, two sided graphics, etc and souvenirs. We have a student from animation department at NID helping with visuals and a film and video student to make a short film for devotees."

Later, there will be interventions to improve on lockers, facilitate a better blanket availing option, etc.

Pradyumna Vyas, Director, NID said, "Lakhs visit Vaishno Devi shrine round the year. Our endeavour is to make their journey more comfortable, rich and less cumbersome though design intervention. NID will be helping the shrine authorities in the entire totality."
