The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) began its two-day open hearing session for cases of human rights violations in Gujarat and the two union territories of Daman & Diu, and Daman & Nagar Haveli, at the Gujarat Police Academy in Karai on Thursday.

Inaugurating the session, NHRC chairman Justice (Retd) HL Dattu said that it was the Commission's priority to ensure that human rights of all citizens of the country are upheld. He also said that NHRC was trying to persuade states to introduce human rights education in schools and universities to create awareness among citizens. PB Gondia, additional director general of police (SC/ST Cell), said that NHRC would take up about 155 cases from various parts of state and the two union territories during the course of the open hearings over two days.

The NHRC chairman said that the Commission would take up and dispose as many complaints related to human rights violations as possible during the hearings, and attempt to provide justice to the complainants.

"I am sure this open hearing will provide us an opportunity to deliberate on human rights issues in Gujarat and the union territories," Dattu said.

On Friday, the second day of the hearing, Dattu and other members of the Commission are slated to hold a joint sitting for some of the important cases. Collectors and IPS officers would be present during the public hearings. Justice Dattu said that apart from the open hearing, the commission would discuss with the state government various other human rights issues, such as of patients suffering from silicosis (lung disease caused by inhalation of crystalline silica dust in stone quarries) and the issues faced by elderly citizens.
