In a bid to accelerate research for finding local solutions to problems such as urban waste management, the state government on Thursday announced a scheme for technology demonstration and pilot development under its Science, Technology and Innovation (STI) Fund.

The scheme, announced by chief secretary JN Singh, aims to identify solutions for problems unique to the public sector, such as urban waste management, environment management and pollution abatement, adoption of sensor-based technologies, security solutions, among others.

"The state government has created a dedicated Innovation Fund of Rs 50 crore under the STI Policy. The fund will support two schemes – one for supporting R&D, and the other for pilot deployment and testing of technologies," Singh said. The Science and Technology department said that maximum assistance under the scheme would be Rs50 lakh per pilot project.

"The fund will be used to support only pilot deployment for the purpose of technology evaluation. Only such pilots, that are useful for service delivery obligations of the government or civic authorities, will be taken up," it said.

There are many start-ups and SMEs working on various innovations in such areas, but it is not possible to validate their effectiveness. Dhananjay Dwivedi, secretary, Science and Technology department, said that this is where the new scheme would come into play.

"The STI Fund will give support to undertake pilot deployment of innovative solutions for public service needs or for strengthening civic services where commercial solutions are not available or have not been tested in the Indian context," he said. He said that the government would support 15 to 20 pilot projects in a year to begin with.

Earlier this month, the state government had set up the Rs50 crore fund for supporting research in ten emerging cutting-edge and high potential technologies such as Artificial Intelligence, robotics, Internet of Things, nano tech, energy storage solutions, among others.
