IAS Dr Ajay Kumar, Secretary of Department of Defence Production in the Ministry of Defence highlighted the need for standardisation in defence manufacturing. Dr Kumar on Tuesday was delivering a lecture to the participants of the Armed Forces Programme (AFP) on iDex: Innovation for Defence Excellence.

Speaking about promoting Indian start-ups to bring solutions to the challenges faced by the Ministry of Defence, he said, "Currently, we import Rs 40,000 crores due to which many firms charge us exorbitantly. However, we only look at input and output while importing as more than a lakh of components need to be Indianised. Every platform has its own set of propriety and a set of protocols. The problem can be sorted if we create a standard for our usage. While we have focussed on testing and quality assurance but have not yet focussed on standardisation."

Dr Kumar stressed on the need for promoting indigenous capability in the defence sector. The Armed Forces Programme is a six months full-time Business Management course conducted by IIM-A specifically for selected officers of various branches of Army, Navy and Air Force who are transitioning into a second career after completion of their tenure in the services.

He further shared the core objectives of the Defence Innovation Fund as facilitation of rapid development of new, indigenous, and innovative technologies and creation of a culture of engagement with innovative start-ups, to encourage co-innovation and co-creation for defence and aerospace sectors. iDex has invited interested participants of AFP to join them and to contribute to the to the success of this noble initiative taken up by the government.
