It’s an early Diwali gift for 11 BJP leaders from chief minister Narendra Modi, who were appointed chairmen or vice-chairmen of various government boards and corporations on Tuesday. The announcement was expected as state BJP president RC Faldu had met the CM recently and got the list cleared from him.
Former deputy chief minister Narhari Amin, who shifted sides from Congress to BJP just before the 2012 assembly elections after being denied a ticket, has been appointed vice-chairman of State Planning Commission.
Influential party leader from Rajkot and former MP, Vijay Rupani, has been appointed chairman of Gujarat Municipal Finance Board. Former MLA Mulu Bera has been named chairman of Gujarat Rural Housing Board.
However, Jayanti Barot, chairman of Gujarat Housing Board, has been moved to Gujarat Backward Classes Development Corporation, a relatively unimportant body as compared to his earlier responsibility at GHB.
Vivek Patel, an emerging young BJP leader from Surat, has been appointed chairman of Gujarat Housing Board in place of Barot. His immediate priority will be to set the ball rolling for construction of affordable homes across the state to contribute to the Modi government’s ambitious target of building 50 lakh affordable homes in five years.
Former MLA Meghji Kanzaria has been appointed chairman of Sardar Patel Sahbhagi Jalsanchay Yojana (Saurashtra & Kutch), whereas Ganesh Chaudhary from Gandhinagar will head Sardar Patel Sahbhagi Jalsanchay Yojana (Gujarat region).
The list is a good mix as far as region, communities and professional background of the appointees are concerned.
Saurashtra, however, dominates the list as five of the appointees hail from there. Three others are from north Gujarat, and one each from Kutch, central Gujarat and south Gujarat.
Five of the appointees are farmers or traders, two are engineers, one is a lawyer, and one a social worker. Five belong to the general category and six are from backward classes.
Arjan Rabari from Kutch has been appointed chairman of Gujarat Gopalak Development Corporation. Babu Jebalia, who is currently president of the party’s farmer cell, has been named chairman of Gujarat Agro Industries Corporation.
Former minister Bhupendra Lakhawala, who was not given a ticket by BJP in the assembly elections, has been appointed chairman of Gujarat State Civil Supplies Corporation.
Pradip Vala from Rajkot has been appointed vice-chairman of Gujarat Backward Classes Development Corporation.
